Isabel Ziegler (b. 1918) and Samuel Ziegler, M.D. (1914-2000) moved to New Mexico in the late 1940s to start the first community hospital in Espanola. They became friends with O'Keeffe, and Dr. Ziegler served as her personal physician from 1949 to the time of her death in 1986. The Zieglers privately published a book about their lives called For the Soul is Dead (1999) that includes a chapter on O'Keeffe. The Zieglers were interviewed by Sarah Burt.
