Biographical and Historical Note

American modernist painter Georgia O'Keeffe cultivated her public image through photography as early as 1918 with a series of photographs by Alfred Steiglitz. Photographers followed O'Keeffe to New Mexico, where she permanently moved after Stieglitz's death. Her likeness appeared in magazines such as Time and Architectural Digest, which featured her Abiquiu home and studio. During this time, O'Keeffe developed her own style of photography, capturing snapshots of her home, beloved Chow Chows, and western landscapes. These photographs passed from O'Keeffe's personal collection to The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation after her death.
