Biographical and Historical Note
Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was an American modernist painter known for her abstract paintings of flowers, skyscrapers, bones, and New Mexico landscapes. Alfred Stieglitz (1862-1946) was an American photographer and gallerist who promoted a select circle of artists, including Georgia O'Keeffe. The two first met in 1907 when O'Keeffe was visiting New York to study at the Art Students League and Stieglitz was running the 291 Gallery. Stieglitz would later exhibit her work at 291, and O'Keeffe would move to New York in 1918. They married in 1924 and lived together full-time in New York until 1929, when O'Keeffe began spending part of each year in New Mexico. O'Keeffe would eventually move to New Mexico permanently after Stieglitz's death in 1946. She owned two homes in New Mexico: the Abiquiu home and studio and the Ghost Ranch house to the north of Abiquiu. With the assistance of Maria Chabot, O'Keeffe took great care to renovate the properties, and developed an extensive garden at her Abiquiu home where she grew fresh produce and herbs. She hosted several guests at her homes, including photographer Todd Webb and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. She also enjoyed world travel, often joining tours facilitated by the Donald L. Ferguson travel agency. O'Keeffe died in 1986 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
