Biographical and Historical Note

West Texas State Normal College formed in 1909 through legislation by the state congress. Canyon, TX was selected as the location for the school shortly thereafter, and the school officially opened its doors to students in 1910. As a normal college, West Texas originally focused on educating future teachers; however, the college would eventually expand its academic offerings and become present-day West Texas A&M University.

Hannah Swearingen originally owned the yearbook, and she took art courses taught by Georgia O'Keeffe while attending West Texas State Normal College. Hannah married Thomas D. Ficke and had two children, Joe and Frances. She died in 1945.

Georgia O'Keeffe joined the faculty at West Texas in 1916, where she headed the art department from 1916 to 1918. Georgia's younger sister, Claudia O'Keeffe, attended the college during this time. Also notably in the yearbook is O'Keeffe's friend, Ted Reid, and his future wife, Ruby Fowler.
