Biographical and Historical Note

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Education and Public Programs Department was founded in 1997, with Jackie Melega serving as the department director until 2014. Since opening in 1997, the Museum has served over 150,000 people through its education and public programs. The education and public programs have won praise from parents, educators and school administrators, as well as awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, New Mexico Arts and Santa Fe Arts Commission. The O’Keeffe Art & Leadership Program was founded in 1998 by the Education and Public Programs Department. Its main focus was on the development of self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills, and self-expression in middle school girls. In 2002, the program opened its doors to young boys as well, recognizing that middle school aged children, as a whole, would benefit from the lessons and artistic journeys fostered within the program. As of 2021, the O’Keeffe Art and Leadership Team decided to offer a gender inclusive program in order to give a more diverse, well-rounded, and comprehensive experience to all participants.
